Counselor depression anxiety

Any therapist can be compassionate.

But I have been there, too.

Maricopa and Pinal County Counselor

Justin Olmstead, MSMFT, LAC

COUNSELING FOR ADULT ARIZONA RESIDENTS

I’ve been where you are, knowing you want to talk to someone but not sure exactly who. As a client, I found it difficult to trust therapists and have confidence in their skills. I not only bring years of counselor training to the table but also my experience of how hard it was to find help during the kind of difficulties we all share. My goal is to serve each client as I wished I could have been.

Justin is a licsensed associate counselor (LAC) in Arizona.

He is family man with years of experience and advanced training in counseling, and marriage and family therapy. Justin teaches family counseling at Arizona Christian University; he is a program coordinator at one of Arizona’s largest behavioral health agencies, and is a member of several professional organizations.

Men’s Issues &

Sex Addiction Recovery

VIDEO CONTENT COMING SOON

Men are experiencing unprecedented feelings of not knowing where to fit in society, how to launch, why they’re depressed or angry, and why they can’t get our of their own way for success. I join forces with these men, leveraging my training and experience to help clarify their past, get disciplined in the present, and forge a bright future.

Sex addiction is an epidemic afflicting many of these men. It is more than a compulsion and giving into impulses. It is the attempt to meet underlying need(s) but in a  way that never really addresses the need. Together we address the need driving the addiction and build a custom program for recovery to regain strength, self-respect, and creativity.

Anxiety and Depression

Common today and throughout history, anxiety and depression afflict many of us. Anxiety is often a symptom of an underlying fear. Depression can attack and rob motivation and energy for work and enjoyment. Together we get to the root of the matter. I specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat these common afflictions.

I personally experience recovery from depression and anxiety, so I can relate. I didn’t just read about it in a book. My desire as a co-struggler is to help others along their way.

Family Counseling

Viscous cycles of miscommunication and misunderstanding are painful for couples and families. Spouses may experience loss of trust and closeness. Parents may feel at a complete loss in understanding their child’s behavior. Families often reach the end of their rope when difficulties seem not to go away but just get worse no matter what they try.

This is where an experienced and trained family therapist can help.

I help couples and families improve communication, explore painful situations, increase understanding of one another, and take critical steps toward closeness.

Family therapy can feel scary, especially for kids, and big emotions can happen, yes. But families often experience adventure and excitement together they did not expect from therapy! This is especially true as they notice family life improving together as a result.

-Two Approaches –

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Many clients request CBT, having heard that it is among the most researched and time-tested methods of therapy available. In short, CBT teaches how our thoughts shape our inner worlds, external behaviors, and moods. It is geared to find and upgrade negative core beliefs we all seem to have from time to time, or chronically since childhood. CBT is a practical, effecient, and highly-personalized form of therapy proven as effective to treat anxiety and depression. It is also fully compatible with a Christian worldview with strong links to the traditional psychotherapy of the historic Christian Church.

I have personally benefited from CBT and have advanced training from the Beck Institute in its theories and methods. Contact me today to get started with your CBT sessions.

Faith Integration

A therapist talking about faith? Too often our lives are full of entertainment or work or worries but shallow on meaning, low on felt purpose, down on drive and motivation, lost for goals worthy of blood, sweat, and tears.

Faith may not be what you think, and you may not know you need it. Faith equals meaning as one takes up the eternal vision revealed by God and progresses in the way of life designed for mankind. Today, most of us are in a meaning crisis because we haven’t been given the riches meaning through faith and its intimate links to mental and emotional well-being. I tailor my therapy to clarify and deepen a client’s beliefs, values, virtues, and discipline with respect to their faith.

In full disclosure, my own faith perspective is historic, traditional Christianity found in the Eastern Orthodox Church wherein we take Holy Scripture seriously and the Life of Christ as the main source of healing. I am a seminarian studying for ordination to the priesthood in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.
